Shane de Blacam residency
A residency in Ireland to explore the important contribution of 2023 RA Architecture Prize winner Shane de Blacam to architecture, culture and society.
Shane de Blacam was awarded the 2023 RA Architecture Prize in recognition of his remarkable craftsmanship and his commitment to creating communal spaces.
De Blacam’s buildings are characterised by their simplicity and their celebration of local materials. Throughout his career, he has been concerned with creating spaces for people to come together, including the sensitively restored Abbeyleix Library in Laois and the elegant Samuel Beckett Theatre at Trinity College, Dublin.
In celebration of de Blacam's work, we are seeking applications from UK-based architects or designers to conduct a six-week research residency in Ireland. This opportunity, developed in collaboration with Architecture at the Edge is open to practising professionals, not just recent graduates.
We are looking for projects which explore at first hand the important contribution of Shane de Blacam to architecture, culture and society; and through their own response to widen and deepen the understanding of his work internationally.
The residency award will consist of a grant of £3000 to cover a travel allowance within Ireland and subsistence for a 6-week residency. In addition, the programme mentoring, advice and contacts from architects throughout Ireland and the UK, partnering organisations and the Royal Academy of Arts.
More information can be found in our open call document
Applications closed at 16:00(GMT) on Wednesday 8 May 2024
