Join artists Florence Peake and Eve Stainton for a roundtable exploring friendship as a conduit for artistic influence.
Artist friendships are often synonymous with collaboration and creation, though they don’t always result in joint works of art. Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp had a seemingly unlikely friendship that went deeper than their shared artistic interests, but influenced both their separate practices. The two men were united by a combination of humour and scepticism that led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life.
Florence Peake and Eve Stainton work independently as artists engaged in disparate practices. They are at different stages in their careers, but meet through ideas around the queer body, sexuality, desire and heightened states of consciousness. They have a shared background in movement that has spurred a non-verbal dialogue for more intimate ways of communication. They are brought together by this dialogue and their attraction to each other, and for this reason are interested in unpicking the use of the word "friendship" here.
This roundtable will explore the place of private relationships in the process of art making. Join this roundtable to explore how friendship and relationships between artists can develop as a conversation through art and how it can become a fundamental part of artist practice.
This event invites audiences to participate in a roundtable discussion in the General Assembly Room. We encourage ticket holders to bring thoughts and perspectives to share with others and generate an informed debate with invited speakers.
