Ai Weiwei
Join Professor Maurizio Marinelli in an intimate exploration of Ai Weiwei’s contribution to the rewriting of China’s urban history, his questioning of meta-narratives and his role as a social commentator.
In this round-table discussion, we invite you to join Professor Maurizio Marinelli (Senior Lecturer in East Asian History, University Sussex) in discussing the story of the ‘China Dream’ and ‘Beautiful China’; meta-narratives that have recently emerged to affirm the national greatness, wealth and strength of China, both domestically and globally.
Through open conversation we will explore the active roles of Ai Weiwei and his contemporaries as social commentators, who have pluralised and nuanced the story with their work as well as the contribution of visual cultures to the rewriting of histories in China today.
This event invites audiences to participate in a round-table discussion in the intimate setting of the General Assembly Room. We encourage ticket holders to bring thoughts and perspectives to share with others and generate an informed debate with invited speakers.
