Entangled Pasts, 1768–now
Re-imagine history through a contemporary lens in this weekend course with artist Adebanji Alade.
In this weekend workshop, inspired by our exhibition Entangled Pasts, 1768–now: Art, Colonialism and Change, you will explore how history unfolded through the eyes of artists – from Joshua Reynolds’ society portraits to the work of Kerry James Marshall.
Throughout the course, tutor Adebanji Alade will encourage you to study eighteenth-century history paintings, and re-imagine them for the present day, taking inspiration from artists such as Kehinde Wiley, who reshapes masterpieces such as Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa. Working from life models, you will paint new figures, characters and stories ‘into history,’ drawing inspiration from the artistic movements that shaped our world.
Minimum age 18. If you have any accessibility needs, please contact public.programmes@royalacademy.org.uk.
