Entangled Pasts, 1768–now
Re-imagine history through a contemporary lens in this weekend course with artist Adebanji Alade.
In this weekend workshop, inspired by our exhibition Entangled Pasts, 1768–now: Art, Colonialism and Change, you will explore how history unfolded through the eyes of artists – from Joshua Reynolds’ society portraits to the work of Kerry James Marshall.
Working with life models and a variety of mediums, including oil paint, you will study eighteenth-century history paintings and re-imagine them for the present day. Working with tutor Adebanji Alade you will paint new figures, characters and stories ‘into history’. We'll draw inspiration from artists such as Kehinde Wiley, who reshapes masterpieces such as Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa and Kerry James Marshall whose work is engaged with the creation of a ‘counter-archive’ that reinscribes black figures within the narratives of Western pictorial tradition.
Adebanji Alade is an award-winning artist, otherwise known as the ADDICTIVE SKETCHER. He is President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and a member of The Chelsea Art Society, and was the BBC Artist in Residence for The One Show, BBC One. His works have been exhibited at the Mall Galleries, and he has taught numerous courses at The Art Academy and Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, Chelsea.
Our time painting in the studio will be complemented by a visit to see Entangled Pasts, 1768–now: Art, Colonialism and Change.
