If you’re an aspiring art writer for print or online, this two-day practical class – split across two Saturdays, 14 and 28 November – gives you the confidence to respond to art with a critical eye, equipping you with tools to write with both style and clarity.
Led by Sam Phillips, Editor of RA Magazine, this two-day practical workshop helps you perfect skills central to art criticism, in particular the description, interpretation and judgement of art. There is a special focus on the RA’s blockbuster Ai Weiwei exhibition.
The first day, Saturday 14 November, includes a visit to the show, supported by advice and exercises to encourage imaginative, original ways to respond to the works on view. The second day, two weeks later on Saturday 28 November, will consider techniques to assess Ai Weiwei’s art, both in its own terms and its wider relevance. The class concludes with tips for approaching editors, and an assignment to submit a review of the show within two weeks of the final session, which Phillips will read and give individual feedback on.
14 November and 28 November 2015, 10.30am – 4.30pm each day.
This class is suitable for all abilities.
Participants must be at least 18 years old and there is a maximum of 25 places for this class.
All materials, ticket to Ai Weiwei exhibition, tea, coffee and lunch will be provided.
Our short courses and classes offer the opportunity to explore subjects ranging from life drawing to the history of portraiture, led by expert tutors and practising artists. These courses introduce traditional art-making processes, as well as perspectives on the history of art and language.
