Writer Sheila Hale and art historian Paul Hills discuss with curator Per Rumberg, the innovation and impact of the great masters, in particular Giorgione and Titian, during the first decade of the 16th century in Venice.
Focusing on a very specific moment in Venetian history, the exhibition In the Age of Giorgione examines the rapid revolution in artistic style at the turn of the 16th century, when emerging artists such as Giorgione and Titian were working alongside Giovanni Bellini and other leading painters of the time. Significant developments in technique, subject matter and style all contributed in making this period such a pivotal moment for the Venetian Renaissance.
In this discussion, we examine the context that gave rise to the artistic achievements of this decade in Venice, and look at the legacy of some of its greatest artists.
This talk will be followed by a drinks reception.
Please note that curator of the exhibition In the Age of Giorgione Per Rumberg will be replacing Andrew Graham-Dixon as chair of the discussion.
