Join art critic Dr. Tim Smith-Laing as he unpacks the RA’s place as a centre for contemporary art for more than 250 years.
Since the first Summer Exhibition in 1769, the Royal Academy of Arts has been a champion of art and artists. Led by Royal Academicians, a group of artists and architects elected by their peers in recognition of their work, it is also home to Britain's longest established art school, the RA Schools. In this talk, Dr. Tim Smith-Laing will explore the RA’s place in the art world, both historically and in the present day.
With a look forward to the Summer Exhibition 2024, this talk will give a flavour of London's contemporary art scene, with insight into the RA Schools, the Royal Academicians and the annual Summer Exhibition.
Dr. Tim Smith-Laing is a lecturer and critic based in London. With a PhD from Oxford, Tim taught there from 2011-2014, focusing on literature, cultural history and the history and theory of criticism. In addition to teaching at the Royal Academy, he is a book critic at The Daily Telegraph, and writes on art for Apollo, Frieze, and the Literary Review. He has recently been the Programme Director of the Executive Masters in Cultural Leadership at the RA, while researching the cultural history of luck, and a novel based on the life of eighteenth-century sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. Tim’s Contemporary Art Summer School will be held at the RA in June 2023.
This event is open to Friends, Bar & Garden Members and House Members of the RA only.
