In the late 19th century the area around Euston, known as Somers Town, was one of London’s worst slums. The area underwent a radical transformation in the 1930’s through the vision of Fr Basil Jellicoe and our tour explores this historic area before plans are implemented to transform it again.
Our Friends’ guided tour of Somers Town includes the fine exterior of the Carreras Tobacco Company with its restored Art Deco black cat statues and Harrington Square Gardens where we learn about its connection with Walter Sickert and his paintings Girl at the Window and Little Rachel. We also view a mural illustrating the history of the area and famous local personalities and visit the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Gallery, the site of the Victorian Women’s Hospital where the original Entrance Hall to the hospital has been restored to its original 1890 appearance, the building is now Unison’s HQ. Our walk finishes at Euston station where we hear about plans for future developments.
