Picture the Light
Screening with Rebecca Salter RA and Max de Wardener
Monday 5 December 2016 7 - 8.30pm
The Academicians’ Room, The Keeper’s House, Royal Academy of Arts
£20.
Rebecca Salter RA discusses her video collaboration 'Picture the Light' with composer Max de Wardener, followed by a screening of the film in the Academicians’ Room.
Born from a conversation between Rebecca Salter RA and Max de Wardener about traditional Japanese musical instruments and inspired by the films of New Zealand’s experimental artist Len Lye, Picture the Light explores the medium of drawing with music composed by de Wardener. The resulting collaboration is a soundtrack with both eastern and western influences and a film about drawing that is almost painterly, featuring Salter drawing with time itself.
Salter and de Wardener will discuss their collaboration and inspiration for the project before the screening. Additional 20th-century experimental films that relate to the collaboration will also be shown and de Wardener will discuss his own 2014 composition for the traditional Japanese instrument, the sho, which can be heard in the film.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
