Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans
Senior Curator Adrian Locke introduces the exhibition 'Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans' and examines the life and work of this truly original artist.
James Ensor is celebrated as one of Belgium’s most innovative artists, whose influence, over a long career, was widespread. Equally adept in painting, drawing and printmaking, his work defies categorisation and convention. Ensor remains largely unknown in the UK, despite having a British father, and his work is underrepresented in national collections.
The exhibition Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans, curated by the contemporary Belgian artist Luc Tuymans, takes a new look at this enigmatic figure who rejected the academic training of his youth to cultivate his own individual style in the face of considerable opposition and hostile criticism. This introduction by Senior Curator and co-curator of the RA exhibition, Adrian Locke, will present an overview of Ensor’s life, focusing on key moments of his career while reflecting on this unique collaboration between two of Belgium's most notable artists.
Doors open at 12.30pm. Unclaimed seats will be released to those waiting for returns at 12.55pm. No admittance will be granted after 1pm.
