Our guided tour of the contemporary art on display in St Paul’s Cathedral includes Bill Viola’s 'Martyrs' and a brand-new water installation arriving in early October.
Throughout history, art in St Paul’s Cathedral has inspired and illuminated the Christian faith for those who visit and provided a focus for reflection, meditation and contemplation. With our expert guide, we explore works including Gerry Judah’s Commemorative Crosses, each over six metres high and installed at the head of the nave, recalling in shape and colour the thousands of white crosses placed in war cemeteries across the world. We examine the 4 Tides paintings by Pablo Genoves, which were commissioned as part of the Cathedral’s commitment to the JustWater 2017 project acknowledging water as essential to life, and as well as Bill Viola’s Martyrs we also learn about its companion piece, Mary. In addition to these contemporary works, the tour will also take in older pieces including Henry Moore’s Mother & Child and William Holman Hunt’s The Light of the World.
