Brunel Museum

Our Friends walking tour of the area around Rotherhithe, led by representatives from the Brunel Museum, will explore the history of this unique riverside area and its connection to engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Rotherhithe, one of London’s docklands, is an area rich in maritime and commercial history. In the Elizabethan era, it was a hugely important site for trading and shipping and remained so into the 19th century and the age of Brunel.

The legendary genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel is evident in his development of Rotherhithe and his engineering triumph: the Thames tunnel. On this walk, Friends enjoy an exclusive opportunity to descend into the grand entrance hall of the tunnel’s chamber, which is half the size of the Globe Theatre. Friends will also learn about the history of both trade and poverty in Rotherhithe and view the spot where Turner painted The Fighting Temeraire.

This event will also take place on 1 June.
