World renowned designer Sir Paul Smith talks with Curator and Head of the RA Schools, Eliza Bonham Carter, about how the world constantly inspires him, and how to look for ideas in everything from the mundane to the extraordinary.
Discover how one distinguished fashion designer created a global brand. Smith talks about his career from cycling-obsessed teen to international fashion designer. He reveals the lessons he’s learnt along the way and where he finds inspiration – from the everyday to the extraordinary.
Sir Paul Smith is one of Britain’s foremost designers. Famous for his clothing and accessories collections, he specialises in an inventive use of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge design to create beautifully made, desirable, modern pieces. From its origins in one small shop in Nottingham, in 1970, Paul Smith has grown into a global business – selling in over seventy countries. Starting with one men’s collection, the business now comprises collections for men, women and children, including, shoes, accessories, fragrance and home furnishings. Throughout its development Paul Smith’s values of curiosity, quality and authenticity have remained constant. Smith was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1991, and was knighted in 2001 for his services to fashion.
