Friends enjoy a tour of Chelsea Physic Garden, the historic walled garden of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, as well as a handling session of rare botanical books from the Garden’s library.
Chelsea Physic Garden is a celebration of the beauty and importance of plants, tucked away beside the Thames, just off the King’s Road. The Garden was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries for its apprentices to study the medicinal qualities of plants. They chose the location for its proximity to the Thames’ warm air currents, and it soon became one of the most important centres of botany and plant exchange in the world.
By special arrangement, Friends will enjoy a talk by the Head Librarian and have a chance to explore rare medieval books from the garden’s archives and special collections. Friends will then explore the garden on a guided tour that focuses on the application of plants in both ancient and modern medicine.
This event will also take place on 29 June.
