Abstract Expressionism
Supported by Robin Hambro
An event for blind and visually impaired visitors – artist educators will lead an audio described tour of the exhibition, followed by refreshments and a handling session.
Exploring an unparalleled period in American art, this long-awaited exhibition reveals the full breadth of a movement that will forever be associated with the boundless creative energy of 1950s New York.
Often monumental in scale, the works of the Abstract Expressionists are at times intense, spontaneous and deeply expressive. At others they are more contemplative, presenting large fields of colour that border on the sublime. These radical creations redefined the nature of painting.
Join us for an audio-described tour of some of the most celebrated art of the past century, including work by Pollock, Rothko, Still, de Kooning, Newman, Kline, Smith, Guston and Gorky. Afterwards, our handling session will allow attendees further understanding of the unique materials and painting processes these artists undertook.
This event includes refreshments, and volunteer support is provided.
