Learn the art of painting drapery, dress and fabric in this weekend course.
Join us for a weekend dedicated to the exploration of folds and texture in drapery, inspired by the works of Angelica Kauffman and Sir Frederic Leighton's iconic Flaming June. These artists employed drapery to convey movement, evoke emotion, and create rich texture and aesthetics in art.
Throughout the weekend you will learn how to draw and paint clothing, drapery and fabrics, working initially from various luscious large-scale fabric still-life setups throughout the studio.
Using the drawing and painting skills which you will have developed, you will then paint from life models set in scenes inspired by classical compositions and costumed in eighteenth century dress to help create convincing life-like paintings of complicated folds, textures and form.
Course tutor Andy Pankhurst, a graduate of the Slade School, is represented by and exhibits with the London gallery, Browse & Darby. A long-standing tutor on the RA’s Courses and Classes programme, Andy is also co-author of the book What Makes Great Art, published in 2012 by Apple Press.
Minimum age 18. If you have any access requirements that you’d like to discuss, please contact public.programmes@royalacademy.org.uk.

The art of disposing the foldings of the drapery makes a very considerable part of the painter's study . . . it requires the nicest judgment to dispose the drapery, so that the folds shall have an easy communication, and gracefully follow each other with such natural negligence as to look like the effect of chance, and at the same time show the figure under it to the utmost advantage
