Fred Cuming RA reflects on his long career as a painter in this short film, shot in and around his East Sussex home.
“Camber Sands on the coast beyond Rye is one of my favourite locations,” says painter Fred Cuming RA. “In summer, the beach can be crowded with holidaymakers. On other days, I might be the only person in miles of open space… it provides me with endlessly fascinating problems of conveying something which is about nothing more than emptiness.”
In this short film, Cuming reflects on his long career as a painter – “I still find every new picture exciting… I’m never certain what course a painting will take” – and his sources of inspiration, which include painter Giorgio De Chirico and the land and seascapes of East Sussex.
