11 prints for under £500

This year the Large Weston Room has been selected and hung by Stephen Chambers RA, who has provided a preview for RA website readers of 11 prints of particular interest which are for sale for under £500.

The prints in this selection feature a wide range of printmaking techniques and range in price from £75-£400 (all prices are for unframed prints). The prints are listed below and followed by comments by Stephen Chambers.

Thomas Williams, Found Unfound.
Thomas Williams, Found Unfound. Wood engraving Edition of 15: £75 each

“This is a wood engraving, a particularly minute piece and one of the few examples of wood engraving in this selection. It feels like a reflection from experience, and scale is very important here. Rather a nice, tender piece.”

Simon Lawson, Early Morning Battersea.
Simon Lawson, Early Morning Battersea. Etching Edition of 50: £250 each

“A monochromatic print using aquatint by a very skilful practitioner of the art.”

Polly Huggett, Untitled.
Polly Huggett, Untitled. Etching Edition of 15: £100 each. SOLD OUT

“Quite an orthodox small etching using a number of methods that are traditionally associated with monochromatic etched plates, and in being simply a depiction of a woman’s head it has quite a lot of soul and information about the person depicted.”

Patsy Wright, Rush Hour in Myddelton Square.
Patsy Wright, Rush Hour in Myddelton Square. Sugar lift and aquatint etching Edition of 15: £95 each. SOLD OUT

"This is an example of sugar lift etching. I rather like the animation in it.”

Katharine Watkins, Grid.
Katharine Watkins, Grid. Etching, hand colouring Edition of 50: £110 each. SOLD OUT

“A hand coloured etching, making what would otherwise be rather an ordinary image into something more curious, taking natural forms and geometric shapes and overlaying them.”

Jennifer Hall, Ploughed Field, Suffolk.
Jennifer Hall, Ploughed Field, Suffolk. Linocut Edition of 30: £195 each

“A very simple landscape, in some ways referring to a tradition of woodcuts that is quite rarely seen these days. Tone is incorporated by using a grey paper but this is otherwise a very graphic print. The way the branch cuts across the field plays with space in an interesting way.”

Giulia Resteghini, Days That Are Gone.
Giulia Resteghini, Days That Are Gone. Lithograph Edition of 8: £250 each. SOLD OUT

“This one I was rather intrigued by, because at first sight it’s a historical scene, possibly set on a train, in an image she’s sourced from an archive. She’s then drawn on top of that original source, making a scene that is initially benign into one that is mischievously interrupted.”

Farah Syed, Blutbild.
Farah Syed, Blutbild. Etching Edition of 15: £400 each

“This is a coloured etching, probably using two plates of scientific forms – cells and atoms and so forth – creating a mesmeric and rather beautiful effect.”

Biljana Tesic, Botanical Explorer.
Biljana Tesic, Botanical Explorer. Photo etching Edition of 20: £160 each

“I think this probably starts from a photograph that has been broken down and manipulated. It uses atmosphere very interestingly.”

Alexander Massouras, The Lion Heeded The Caution and Stayed Within.
Alexander Massouras, The Lion Heeded The Caution and Stayed Within. Etching. Edition of 60: £170 each

“An extremely simple, informative, hard ground etching which has the potential for humour and intrigue.”

Matthew Ablitt, By The Moon.
Matthew Ablitt, By The Moon. Etching Edition of 100: £185 each

“This is an orthodox hand-coloured etching that uses many traditional methods including hard and soft ground combined with rough areas that animate the background. He’s flicked speckles of chalk onto the plate before it’s been inked, which has created the white specks that glisten in the background”
