Competition

Alongside the exhibition a competition was launched for which members of the public were invited to produce their own ‘Paper Cities’. These were judged by architect Peter Cook RA, illustrator Sara Fanelli, Blueprint editor Vicky Richardson and the RA’s Architecture Programme Curator Kate Goodwin.

Overall Winner - Anna Boldina

Chosen as it had a very strong and inspiring idea about future cities that was expressed with a clear and intriguing drawing style. As Peter Cook said, it is a project “which hasn’t lost its nerve.”

Anna Boldina has just finished a Masters course at the Bartlett, UCL. She wins a Crevasse vase designed by Zaha Hadid RA for Alessi.

Illustration Award - Tom Gibson and Bee Emmott

Chosen by the jury for its sophisticated and seductive imagery which provides a poetic response to the brief. “Our drawing, entitled 'elusive city' plays with the idea of trying to capture the 3D physical city on a 2D piece of paper.“

Tom Gibson is an architectural graduate from Edinburgh University doing an internship with Toh Shimazaki architects. Bee Emmott has just graduated jointly from the Edinburgh College of Art and the University, with a degree that incorporates both art history and practice. They win a years membership to the Society of Architectural Illustrators .

Children’s Prize - Hamish Fawcett (age 11)

Hamish’s entry shows a sophisticated and intriguing understanding of the city, expressing it in a human form. It is fun, ingenious and inventive.
