Paper City Competition
We are launching a competition alongside the exhibition Paper City: Urban Utopias which invites you to submit your own ‘Paper City’. The competition will be judged at the end of the exhibition by architect Peter Cook RA, illustrator Sara Fenelli, Blueprint editor Vicky Richardson and the RA’s Architecture Programme Curator Kate Goodwin. Prizes for the competition include a Crevasse vase designed by Zaha Hadid RA for Alessi, art materials by Daler Rowney, and a year's membership to the Society of Architectural Illustration (SAI).
The Crevasse vase was Zaha Hadid's second collaboration with Alessi, following her participation in Tea & Coffee Towers project in 2002. The outline cleaves the three-dimensional nature of space with a force similar to that of an arctic crevasse, while the twisted walls accentuate the verticality and the plastic stress is embodied in a composure of algid perfection which takes time for the eyes to get accustomed to, as though one were looking at the reflection of perpetual snow. Made of 18/10 stainless steel.
How to enter
What could or should the city of the future be like? Cities, their development and reinvention, are of huge public interest: the world’s population is increasingly concentrated in cities; in east Asia and the middle east new cities are being built at speed; closer to home urban development is hotly debated.
Despite this activity, official proposals for cities from masterplanners, civil servants and developers seem to lack inspiration and ambition.
We invite you to create your own Paper City, to stimulate and engage public debate.
Ideally the drawing will be ‘work in progress’ with an emphasis on thinking big, and outside the current framework of official debate.
The image should be drawn or printed onto the competition entry form. This can either be downloaded from the link below or drawn directly onto the blank competition entry sheets which you can tear off in the exhibition.
