Historical Background

William Roscoe went bankrupt following a banking collapse in 1816. This led to the sale of his house and his large collection of valuable books, manuscripts and art treasures.

Content Description

Roscoe has translated a few more books of Klopstock's Messiah; Fuseli's translation; observations on Klopstock's works. At a recent sale of his father's pictures, Roscoe had redeemed Fuseli's 'Amoret' ['Amoret Released from the Enchantment of Busiran by Britomart']: would Fuseli be prepared to restore the work?
