Content Description

Miscellaneous correspondence and other papers of Fuseli dating from the last 25 years of his life, and papers of his executor, John Knowles, including items relating to the sale of Fuseli's paintings in 1827, and correspondence with Sir Thomas Lawrence, one of the principal purchasers. It seems clear from Knowles' Life and Writings of Henry Fuseli, 3 vols, 1831, that Knowles was in possession of a large collection of Fuseli papers, of which this is only a small part.

Provenance

The papers listed here passed from John Knowles, biographer of Fuseli, to a descendant, E. F. Windeatt, a solicitor of Druid, Ashburton, Devon. [NRA list, 1973.]

Acquisition Details

The papers were purchased by the RA "for a nominal sum" in 1971 from T. Griffiths, Warden, Devon Centre, Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon. [Annual Report, 1971; note by Philip James, November 1971, at front of box.]

Arrangement

The arrangement preserves that of the 1973 finding aid.
