Jean-Marie Delatre, Penelope weeping over the bow of Ulysses

Penelope weeping over the bow of Ulysses, 15 March 1784

Jean-Marie Delatre (1746 - 1840)

RA Collection: Art

This is a much reduced copy of a stipple-engraving produced by Delatre under the supervision of Francesco Bartolozzi RA and published by Ann Bryer in 1779. This version was published later in 1784 by James Gamble. It forms a pendant to 'Dido invoking the Gods' (see 04/2321) and was probably intended to be sold as a singly-issued print in its own right. Many versions of the original painting by Angelica Kauffman RA exist including an example at Burghley House, Lincolnshire.
