The cast reproduces the impost of the main passageway of the north (Capitoline) side of the Arch of Septimius Severus (AD 203).

This cast was acquired by the Royal Academy from the collection of Thomas Lawrence which was sold on 10 May 1830. In the section on plaster casts, under the heading Arch of Septimius Severus, entry 34 reads, "Impost of Middle Arch".
