Samuel Laurence (1812 - 1884)

Samuel Laurence (often spelled Lawrence), was a British portrait painter, born at Guildford, Surrey, in 1812. He exhibited regularly at the Society of British Artists from 1834 and at the Royal Academy from 1836 until 1882. His portraits included Thomas Erskine, Thomas Carlyle, Charles Babbage and Robert Browning. He also exhibited crayon drawings, including Charles Dickens (‘Sketch of Boz’), William Makepeace Thackeray, Anthony Trollope, Sir Henry Cole.
