Sculptor, writer and photographer, son of Carl Friedrich Lessing. He studied drawing and then painting with his father and in 1863 went to the Akademie in Karlsruhe to study sculpture with C. J. Steinhäuser. Between 1865 and 1868 Lessing studied with the sculptor Albert Wolff at the Akademie in Berlin. Prominent German Historicist sculptor whose work largely shaped the appearance of Berlin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
