The plates show the Gothic church built ca. 1499-1606, which replaced the earlier Romanesque building.

This was the third publication in the Society of Antiquaries' series on the principal ancient churches of Britain, following those on St Stephen's Chapel in the Palace of Westminster (1795) and Exeter cathedral (1797). It was followed by accounts of the cathedrals of Durham (1801), Gloucester (1809) and St Alban's (1813). Projected volumes on the cathedrals of St. Davids, Wells and Norwich did not appear.
