Summary Note

The added engraved title-plate (plate I) reads, 'Plan, Elevations, Sections, and Specimens of the Architecture of the Abbey church of Bath.' This and all other plates carry the date of 23rd April 1798.

The plates show the Gothic church built ca. 1499-1606, which replaced the earlier Romanesque building.

This was the third publication in the Society of Antiquaries' series on the principal ancient churches of Britain, following those on St Stephen's Chapel in the Palace of Westminster (1795) and Exeter cathedral (1797). It was followed by accounts of the cathedrals of Durham (1801), Gloucester (1809) and St Alban's (1813). Projected volumes on the cathedrals of St. Davids, Wells and Norwich did not appear.

Binding Note

20th-century half green morocco, green cloth-covered boards; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'The Cathedrals Of Exeter, Bath, Durham, Gloucester & St. Albans. R.A. 1797-1817'. Bound with four others.
