Responsibility Note

Pl. 129 is unsigned; all other plates and decorations are signed by draughtsmen and/or engravers. Draughtsmen were F. Aquila, N. Dorigny and R. v. Audenaert; the engravers, F. Aquila, P.S. Bartoli, C. Randon, N. Dorigny, G.B. de Poilly, R. v. Audenaert, F. Andriot, G. G. Frezza and F. de Poilly. The name of the printer, Gaetano Zenobi, is given in the colophon. Almost every plate carries the publisher's imprint of Domenico de' Rossi. The publication is dedicated by Domenico de' Rossi to the Pope (Clement XI).

Summary Note

Most of the statues shown are ancient; but thirty-six plates show modern statues, by Bernini, Michelangelo, Giambologna, Fancelli, Andrea Lombardo, Lorenese, Baratta, Nocchieri, Algardi, Lorenzo de Credi, Duquesnoy and P. Ligorio. Some statues are shown from more than one angle. The Sposizioni describe 161 plates; the additional plate, numbered 162, shows a statue of Pope Paul IV ascribed to Pirro Ligorio. According to the RIBA catalogue the presence of this additional plate indicates that this set is from the 1740 reissue.

A resolution to purchase this book was passed at a meeting of the RA Council on 13 September 1787 (RA Council Minutes II, 47).
