Summary Note

The first essay is a pioneering study of painting in Europe from ca. 400 to ca. 1400 A.D. The author had also written on classical art. He was an advocate of realism rather than idealism in art.

The essay, Musée Olympique De L'Ecole Vivante Des Beaux-Arts, in which the author pleads for the encouragement of contemporary painters and sculptors, had first been published in 1796. It contributed to the establishment of the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in the early nineteenth century.

Copy Note

A preliminary and a rear leaf carry annotations in ink. The former begins, 'J. Mitford.1843. Feb. 1844 ...'. This may refer to the literary scholar, the Revd. John Mitford (1781-1859).
