General Note

Vol. I: [iv], xlv, [i], 280 [i.e. 122], [10], 35, [1] [i.e. 32], [2]p., frontis. (port.), [87] pl. (2 folding). - Vol. II: [iv], xl, [i], 423 [i.e. 225], [15] p., frontis. (port.), [101] pl. The discrepancy between the printed pagination and the actual number of pages of text is explained by the fact that the plates were treated as pages and numbered continuously with the text pages adjacent to them - with the exception of the frontispieces and one plate in vol.1 inserted between p.16 and 17 of the Descrizione Del Modello, which is numbered 'Pag. 17'.

Some issues have xxxvi preliminary pages in Volume I in place of the xlv in the Academy's copy, and vii pages in Volume II in place of the xl in the Academy's copy. The Millard copy is described as having 88 plates in Volume I.

Summary Note

Half-titles read: 'Delle Antichità Di Ercolano Tomo Quinto (Sesto) O Sia Primo (Secondo) De' Bronzi'.

These volumes conform with those on Le Pitture Antiche Di Ercolano. They describe bronzes according to type, with brief indications of find-spots and dates of finds (chiefly from Portici and Resina (in a few cases the Villa Dei Papiri is specified), occasionally Civita and Gragnano), but with helpful explanatory notes incorporating quotations from Latin and ancient Greek sources and bibliographic references. Several objects are shown from more than one angle; and most include a scale of measurement (Roman and Neapolitan palmi).

Provenance

Purchased by 1780. (RAA CIM III, 109-10, 1801).
