Summary Note

Mrs. Jameson became well-known as an art historian, particularly of the history of Christian iconography in western Europe. In her Introduction to the present guide-book she already defines forms, styles and techniques of art and writes on the philosophy of art, critical reception and connoisseurship.

'Barry's Pictures', mentioned on the title page of Volume II, are his mural paintings for the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (London).
