Landowner, politician; collector, and commissioner of works of art. Succeeded to the marquisate in November 1809 on the death of his half-brother, John Henry, the second marquess. Son of William Petty, 2nd earl of Shelburne, 1st marquess of Lansdowne (1737-1805).
