In response to her letter on the assuming escapades of social climbers, highlighting "Foots Calwalador" for particular ridicule. He is glad she is enjoying Halnaby [Hall, Ripon] and is sure Mrs. C. will chaperone her to the Opera. They are to have their own opera, in the garden of Whitton, next summer, with dancing between the acts by "Couse, Yenn, Sr. George, Chalmers, Mrs. Gammon and others". Imparts a rather gloomy meditation on the process of aging. Cornelia will take charge of the dresses for their opera, Milbanke the band, Jack "centinel of the gate", George captain of the guard.
