He is horrified at the temerity of the man who appears to have won her affection. He has no fortune, is sunk in debt with no prospects of working his way to repayment. This is not love, it is Madness! Through metaphorising on the nature of love he all but accuses the suitor of attempting to steal Charlotte from him. Urges her to think further before embarking on a calamity. A later annotation indicates the person at issue was a "Revd. Dr. K___s".
