Dick describes his role in the commissioning by the First Commissioner of Works in 1937 of statues of Admirals
Jellicoe and
Beatty for Trafalgar Square. He states that Ernest Gillick, one of the chosen sculptors, had at first co-operated with the idea of using the two existing fountains as memorials, but finally decided that he did not approve of the plan. Dick includes a copy of a letter from Gillick to
Sir Edwin Lutyens, dated 10 November 1937, in which he states that the project presents insuperable difficulties and he cannot be of any further help.
