Historical Background

The first standing committee on the Schools was created in 1870 "to inspect the working of the Schools and report thereon to Council". This committee was wound-up in 1874 when it was decided that the Schools should be administered directly by the Council, along with the Keeper and the Visitors.

A Standing Committee on the Schools was revived in January 1919, but this was soon overtaken by the formation of a "Special" Schools committee, established by Council at the end of 1919 to consider the reorganisation of the Schools. The work of the committee continued through to March 1920 and the election of Charles Sims. The committee then transmuted into a standing committee which operated until November 1928, at which point it was disbanded by Council. Full details given in a memorandum of Council in the 1928 annual report. A special committee was again convened in December 1942 to look into "the study of art", specifically in relation to how the Schools might operate at the close of the war. This committee reported in 1945 and disbanded (see RAA/PC/6/10).

A committee was re-established in 1978 by Council, under the Chairmanship of the Keeper. This committee was in turn reconstituted according to the wishes of Brendan Neiland on 1st October 1998. This new committee became known as the Schools Board in 1999. On Neiland’s expulsion the Council recreated the Schools Committee, with a revised remit, commencing Oct 2005.
