Historical Background

A standing committee was first appointed in 1869 for the oversight of the first Winter Exhibition, held 1870. This committee continued its work until the outbreak of World War I. The committee was revived to manage temporary patriotic exhibitions during the war and subsequently convened to help manage the major externally organised "blockbusters" of the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II a committee of external experts was created to confidentially advise on Royal Academy exhibition policy. With the creation of an Exhibitions Office in 1968 an internal Exhibitions Committee of Academicians was revived and continues to the present day.
