Historical Background

Following discussions in Council, including the reading of a letter on the subject from Augustus John, it was decided that the President, Sir William Llewellyn, should make an appeal to the Government and the Import Duties Advisory Committee for the exemption of certain foreign works of art "of educational importance to the public", such as works in the RA loan exhibitions, from import duties under the provisions of the Import Duties Act.

File of correspondence between the President and members of the Government, the Import Duties Advisory Committee, and others, relating to the RA's request that works of art brought into the country for the purposes of education or exhibition should be exempt from import duty.
