Historical Background

The Special Committee on the summer exhibition was appointed by Council on 13 July 1937 to discuss suggestions made at the General Assembly of 22 June 1937. The report of the Committee, dated 12 October 1937, was read at the General Assembly of 16 November 1937. The report wished to encourage the submission of works by "rising or notable artists who are not accustomed or inclined to submit their works to the Selecton Committee in the ordinary way, and to ask them to send in certain specified works of high merit which have been noted by a few members deputed for the purpose".
