Historical Background
The RA had gained the permission of the British Museum to obtain a set of casts from the moulds of the Phigalian marbles. The letter was discussed at a meeting of Council, 15 January 1817. The list of Canova's observations had been enclosed in a letter from Charles Long dated 31 December 1816.
Content Description
The paper contains Canova's comments on 22 antique casts, requested by the Royal Academy from the Vatican collection of sculpture.
