Content Description
List of those Academicians who deposited 5s 3d on serving on Council, and afterwards made a present of a piece of plate, with a description of the piece, and list of defaulters. A further list of defaulters is placed on the reverse of the second piece and dated 23 December 1799.
Also on the reverse of the second piece is an abortive draft of the Annual Royal business for the year 1772, written in 1771.
Provenance
The origin of this document, although lying solidly within the Royal Academy archive, has always been a matter of doubt. It has traditionally carried the only marked date, ie. 1799. However the presence of a draft document of 1771 on the reverse strongly suggests an earlier origin.
In general the list of members follows that of precedence, with the President at the head, then the officers and body of foundation members. The exceptions to this rule lie in the period 1771-1773 where the order is a little mixed-up. This would add weight to a suggestion that the document was initially drawn up in that period.
