Historical Background

"The Treasurer reported that he had bound William Brooking apprentice to Samuel Waddon, peruke maker of St John's, Hommerton, Hackney, for the term of seven years, produced the indenture, which was ordered to be kept by the Secretary in the Royal Academy, and Mr Chambers was appointed by the Council to enquire from time to time in what manner the boy was treated by his master" (Council minutes, 30 June 1769). Waddon had also attended the meeting of Council of 24 June 1769.

Indenture of apprenticeship of William Brooking, son of Charles Brooking, painter, deceased, of St Martin's parish, to Samuel Waddon, of Hackney, in the art of peruke making. Witnessed by William Chambers, Treasurer, who paid the fee of 11 guineas.
