Historical Background

Weinglass (p. 425) thinks that the reference to "Bertram" may relate to a lost painting corresponding to the drawing 'Wolfram Introducing Bertram (Bertrand) of Navarre to the Place where he had Confined his Wife, with the Skeleton of her Lover'.

Content Description

Thanking Knowles for his letter. They will be in Piccadilly at 7 pm, so that all formal dinner ideas must be laid aside. If not engaged, Knowles will receive them with a tolerable fire at Somerset House. Fuseli gives thanks for his sending the note to S[tratton] Street: "Bertram has a Laming power."
