Historical Background
The Academy had initiated attempts to organise a major survey exhibition of German Art in both 1920 and 1938, without success. Gerald Kelly initiated a fresh initiative in 1949.
Work on the exhibition began briskly, with an eminent committee of British experts appointed. The plug was peremptorily pulled by the West German Government in the summer of 1950, despite the enthusiastic cooperation of German Museums.
Content Description
Files resulting from the all activities of the British Committee and their international partners in the organisation of an exhibition of German Art, 800-1830.
The files appear to have been maintained by L. Hubbard, Assistant RA Secretary. This was done with much duplication. Also series such as committee minutes are split between several files.
Appraisal
The files have been weeded according to the stipulations laid out for management of exhibition organisation records.
In this case duplicate papers have been removed for destruction, mostly lists of works and minutes. A few pro-forma style letters to lenders have also been removed.
