He went to the Royal Academy varnishing day. His picture The Nun's is hung in spot recently occupied by Sargent's large portrait groups. The success of the picture is overwhelming.

Abbey says it is the most talked about picture in the Academy, Seymour Lucas said that soon he "would be one of us". Barratt told him that Tadema and Dicksee had put his name down as a candidate for Associateship.
