Historical Background

The first exhibition in the Society of Artists' new exhibition room in the Strand was held on 13 May 1772. A grand opening had been held on 8 May and the entertainment included a laudatory ode by the Rev. Evan Lloyd, set to music by James Hook, the organist and composer at Marylebone pleasure gardens.
