Gilbert seems to have lived in the vicinity of Blackheath, London for most of his life. The photograph was probably [copyright form dated 1883, number 1/365/271, National Archives, Kew] taken at his house at Vanbrugh Park, Blackheath where Gilbert lived from about the late 1860s or early 1870s. The painting behind the figure of Gilbert is 'Fair St George' which was exhibited at the Academy in 1881.
