Joseph Johnson (1738 - 1809)

Bookseller, publisher in London 1761-1809. Trading as Johnson and Davenport 1765-8; Johnson and Payne 1768-70. Addresses: Paternoster Row (1760-70); St Paul’s Churchyard (1770-1809). A man of firm and advanced views, he published such innovative authors as G. Wakefield, J. Priestly, Erasmus Darwin, H. Tooke, M. Wollstonecraft, Tom Paine, H. Fuseli and Maria Edgworth.
