The 53 plates carry no numbers. In the engr. List Of Plates they are described as an unnumbered 'Wood-Block For The Cover Of The Numbers', and as pl. 1-51 (incl. t.pl.); and the engraved List itself constitutes the 53rd plate.

Responsibility Note
The first plate, 'Wood-Block For The Cover ...', is signed as drawn by W. Harvey and engraved by S.M. Slader. The title-plate names E.W. Cooke as draughtsman and etcher within the title. The 'List Of Plates' states, 'The whole of the Subjects Drawn & Etched by Edwd Willm Cooke, and Printed by S.H. Hawkins.' All other plates are signed as drawn and etched by E(dward) W(illiam) Cooke.
The printed wrappers which originally accompanied each part as it was published serially provide the further information that the work was etched 'Under The Superintendence Of George Cooke' (E.W. Cooke's father), was published by J. & A. Arch, Cornhill, Carpenter & Son, Bond Street, Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, Paternoster Row, Moon, Boys and Graves, Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, Moon of Threadneedle Street, J. Allen, Birmingham, Curtis of Plymouth, Deightons of Cambridge, Wakeman of Dublin and George Cooke of Hackney, and was dedicated to and patronized by the Duke of Clarence (afterwards King William IV).

Summary Note
The publication-date of 1829 is given on the title-plate and on the engraved 'List Of Plates', and most plates carry dates of 1828 or 1829; but the last plate before the List carries the date of 1830. The work was published serially.
E.W. Cooke early became one of Britain's most admired marine-painters. The meticulous drawings which he published in the 1830s form a loving record of a kind of shipping that would change rapidly during the course of the century.

Provenance
The title plate is inscribed in ink, 'Presented to the Library of the Royal Academy by E.W. Cooke: 15th.. Jany: 1852.' (Cooke had been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1851.)
